Imperfection 2022
inspired by “Gaea” by Lee Krasner (1966)
This project is inspired by Gaea (1966) by Lee Krasner, a work that marked a reinvention of her artistic style. During the mid-1960s, Krasner embraced a spirit of freedom and experimentation, moving away from the dense, tightly controlled compositions of the late 1940s toward broader, more expressive brushstrokes. The color story of this garment reflects the vibrant and layered palette seen in Gaea.
The voluminous, rounded shape of the skirt—crafted from layers of taffeta and tulle—echoes the spherical, organic forms within the painting. Viewed from above, the silhouette evokes the flowing, circular movement present in Krasner’s abstract work.
The title of this collection, Imperfection, draws directly from Krasner’s approach to art. Her continual experimentation challenged conventional expectations of refinement, embracing what some might consider flaws as markers of authenticity and originality. Similarly, my garment-particularly the skirt-may appear unpolished or unconventional, but I see that as a strength. Through its raw, imperfect quality, it carries a sense of creative honesty and emotional depth. It is, in its own way, “imperfectly perfect.”
